How to Pass Your HGV Theory Test First Time
A no-nonsense breakdown of the DVSA HGV theory test - what's in it, how it's marked, and exactly how to revise for each part.
What is the HGV theory test?
Before you can take your HGV practical driving test you must pass the DVSA LGV/HGV theory test. It's split into two parts you sit separately - Module 1a (multiple choice) and Module 1b (hazard perception). If you want to drive HGVs professionally for a living you'll also need to pass Driver CPC Module 2 (case studies) and Module 4 (practical demonstration).

1. How to pass HGV Multiple Choice (Module 1a)
You'll get 100 questions and need 85 correct to pass. You have 1 hour 55 minutes. Questions cover the Highway Code, vehicle safety, loads, drivers' hours, tachographs and road signs.
- Revise little and often. 20-30 minutes a day beats one long cram session.
- Do full mock tests. Sit unlimited timed mocks until you're comfortably scoring 90+.
- Review every wrong answer. Read the explanation, don't just re-guess.
- Learn drivers' hours & tachographs. This is where most learners drop marks.
- Use the voiceover if you struggle with reading, English isn't your first language, or you're dyslexic - it's available in Punjabi, Polish, Urdu and Arabic on our kit.
2. How to pass HGV Hazard Perception (Module 1b)
You'll watch 19 video clips from the driver's seat of an HGV. Each clip has one developing hazard (one has two). You get up to 5 marks per hazard - the earlier you click, the higher the score. Pass mark is 67 out of 100.
- Click when a hazard starts developing - not when you first see something, and not when it's already happened.
- Click once, then a second time to confirm. Don't spam-click - it scores you zero for that clip.
- Watch the whole scene: parked cars, pedestrians, cyclists, junctions ahead - not just the vehicle in front.

3. How to pass Driver CPC Module 2 (Case Studies)
Module 2 is only required if you want to drive HGVs professionally. You'll work through 7 real-world case studies with 6-8 questions each. Pass mark is 40 out of 50. Time allowed: 1 hour 15 minutes.
